Lyon Beat Angers to End Losing Run and Return to Ligue 1 Top Three

Lyon defeated Angers at home on Sunday to halt a run of two consecutive losses in all competitions and move back into third place in Ligue 1, according to RMC Sport. Ernest Nuamah put the home side ahead before half-time, and Corentin Tolisso sealed the result late with a header from a corner. Angers, who RMC Sport said competed without disgracing themselves, sit 15th.

Why it matters

The victory ends a difficult spell for Lyon, who had lost their previous two matches without scoring across all competitions. Returning to the podium places gives the club breathing room in the league table and restores momentum after that barren stretch. The result also carries weight off the pitch, with RMC Sport reporting that it may prove to be Paulo Fonseca's final match in charge, as the coach has been linked with a move to Sporting Portugal.

Fonseca's emotional farewell?

RMC Sport described Fonseca as visibly moved during the celebrations, appearing deeply affected as the match drew to a close. At the final whistle, the broadcaster reported, he went around greeting each member of his staff individually before heading down the tunnel. RMC Sport noted that he left the pitch in tears, a reaction the outlet said was hard to separate from the speculation about his future.

The report stopped short of confirming any departure. Fonseca's contract situation and the Sporting link remain reported speculation rather than settled fact.

Nuamah strikes, Tolisso finishes

Lyon led at the interval after Nuamah found the net, a goal Foot Mercato highlighted as a fine opener. Nuamah, speaking to Ligue 1+ after the match, called it an important evening and a strong collective display, adding that he was pleased to score and that taking the three points was what mattered.

The second goal arrived near the end. RMC Sport reported that Nakamura delivered a corner to the near post, where Tolisso glanced the ball into Anthony Lopes's goal to make it 2-0. Tolisso, a former Lyon player facing his old club, had earlier tested Lopes with a long-range effort the goalkeeper gathered on the ground.

Lyon controlled much of the contest. RMC Sport noted that the home side were rarely troubled after the break by an Angers team that had looked more dangerous in the first half but struggled to keep possession later on. Duranville curled a shot narrowly wide following a Tolisso lay-off, and Boudache also came close with a left-footed effort from outside the box. Abner overlapped behind Nakamura and sent in a low cross that Bidstrup nearly converted, only for Lefort to intervene.

Angers had their moments. Greif, the Lyon goalkeeper, mis-hit a goal kick straight into a central area, and Belkhdim pounced to set up Peter, whose duel with the keeper ended with Greif smothering the ball at his feet to recover. Sbaï beat two defenders with a sharp turn but shot wide rather than picking out a teammate. Bacher headed a corner over from the near post.

Angers accept the margins

Haris Belkebla gave a measured assessment afterwards. Speaking to Ligue 1+, he said the match had been decided by small details and that Lyon had been the more efficient team in both penalty areas. He added that the big sides separate themselves in exactly those moments, that fortune had not favoured his team, and that Angers had to keep working without giving up.

Referee Bollengier booked Louis Mouton for tripping Tagliafico after the Argentine had already released the ball, and an Angers defender was cautioned for pulling back Boudache during a counterattack. Stéphane Gilli made his first changes with Peter and Belkebla coming off, while Mouton, Raolisoa and Bermont also entered the game for Angers at various points.

Lyon's win lifts them to third. Angers remain 15th. What happens next centres on Fonseca: whether the Sporting reports materialise will determine whether this was a farewell or simply a much-needed result.
